How to Clean a Chimney
Cleaning the chimney alone can be
difficult unless you have a friend or neighbor to assist
you.
Moreover, knowing what implements are
needed can be determined by asking a professional at your
local hardware or home store.
In addition, knowing the size of the
chimney will determine what types of brushes are
needed.
In addition to the brushes, you will
need rods, a flashlight, two ladders, and a vacuum cleaner.
You will also need safety glasses,
gloves, and a mask from a hardware store. Purchase some type
of harness/rope that you can wrap around the chimney and
attach to your body so that you can move around
easily.
First, ensure that the ladder used to
get to the roof is firmly locked in place. Depending upon
the size of the chimney, a smaller ladder may also be
needed.
Once you have reached the chimney,
remove the cap or safety cover from the chimney.
Use the larger brush to clean the
interior. Move the brush in an up and down
motion.
Next, use the shorter brush to clean
the flue.
Finally, remove the creosote and the cold ashes from the
damper as well as from the fireplace with the vacuum
cleaner.
