How to Clean
Suede
Suede is an expensive material to own when
we’re speaking of clothes. Maintaining its good look can be a
challenge. Removing a stain can become a nightmare. So, why do
we buy it? Like I said, it looks good. If you must have suede
in your wardrobe arsenal, here are a few ways to clean it in
the event that a stain occurs.
Stains on a material like suede should be
taken care of as soon as possible to avoid ruining the fabric.
Rubbing suede with a cloth will restore the nap. For those who
don’t know, “nap” refers to the fibers on the surface of the
suede that stand up. If you’ve ever looked at a suede skirt or
jacket it sometimes looks like it is two shades of the same
color. This happens when the nap is going in different
directions. Brushing the nap in the same direction restores the
natural look of the suede.
If the stains on your suede are dry, try
using a pencil eraser to gently remove the stains. When the
stains are wet, try to remove as much of the liquid as possible
by blotting the stain with a paper towel. Once the stain dries,
use a pencil eraser to remove it. After, brush the fabric with
a suede brush to get the nap going in the same direction. For
grease stains, apply a bit of cornstarch or talc to the stain
to absorb the grease. Let the cornstarch sit on the stain for a
few hours before wiping it off.
Stains on suede boots or shoes can be dealt
with a little differently. To remove dry stains, try using a
nail file to remove the stain and get the nap to stand up. For
wet stains, apply a bit of white vinegar to a clean, damp cloth
and blot the stain. Don’t do this too much because it could
interfere with the professional cleaning process later.
Stains on suede should be treated
professionally when possible. Dry cleaning suede can be
expensive so do your best not to stain it. Avoid wearing suede
to parties where drinks will be served. Carry an umbrella when
there is a chance of rain in the forecast. Avoid wearing suede
boots or shoes to an outdoor function or after a heavy rain.
Mud will become attracted to your shoes.
The best way to manage your suede apparel is
to protect it from the beginning. After you purchase your suede
garments, apply a leather protective spray solution to it that
will help repel stains. Avoid using plastic garment bags. When
your suede comes home from the dry cleaners, remove the plastic
covering before hanging your clothes in the closet.
