How to Clean Leather
Leather comes in two types: finished and
unfinished.
Finished leather is like luggage, purses,
furniture, and clothing.
Unfinished leather is like baseball gloves and
riding saddles. It is important to know which kind you own so
that it can be cleaned the right way.
Regular cleaning of finished leather will
maintain its shine and integrity. Work mild soap into a lather
on a warm, damp rag. Wring out any excess water. Rub your
leather product with the soapy rag.
Wash off the soap with a damp rag. The store
where you purchased the leather items should also sell leather
conditioners. If you have one, rub it on the leather to keep it
supple. If a conditioner is not recommended for your product
then just allow the leather to air dry.
Unfinished leather can be cleaned with saddle
soap. Apply the soap to a cloth and work it into the leather.
Use a clean rag to wipe away any excess soap. After the leather
dries, apply an oil to preserve the leather. If you are ever in
doubt about how to clean any leather product, consult a
professional.
A common source of stains is leather furniture.
If you have children, then you may encounter any number of
stains that need to be cleaned. Prompt attention aids in the
cleaning process.
Ink and leather furniture do not mix. If you
have an ink stain on your leather couch, try hairspray. Spray
the inked area and then wipe. This may take more than one
application. If the ink is persistent, talk to a
professional.
If people eat while sitting on your couch, then
grease stains could become a problem. Blot away all of the
grease that you can. Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder on
the stain. The powder will soak up the grease in the leather.
Let the powder sit for several hours before wiping it off.
Kids get gum on everything. If you spot gum on
your fine leather furniture, don’t blow a gasket. Grab a
sandwich bag and fill it with ice cubes. Rub the bag with the
ice cubes over the gum to harden it.
Once the gum is hard, it will be easier to
remove from the leather. If all of it does not come up, grab a
hair dryer and apply heat. Once the gum has cracked, remove the
pieces.
Blood or urine from animals or small children
can be wiped clean. Use a damp cloth to remove the stain as
soon as you notice it. Allow the leather to air dry.
Owning fine leather does not have to be a
hassle. Consult a professional when in doubt about how to clean
it. If you follow a few simple tips to keep it clean, you’ll be
alright.
